Removal of dead trees, Boating Pond, etc

This work section deals with the removal of dead tree trunks and the replacement of the lost trees.  This exercise is one which relates to all the tree stands throughout the river valley but excludes the woodlands area referred to in Section 5.  In addition to the tree works opportunity will be taken to effect repairs to the river banking located where the outfall pipe from the Boating Pond enters the river.

It is considered that opportunity should be taken to introduce lighting to the path encircling the Boating Pond and the section of path lying between the Boating Pond and the Road Bridge.  Walkers use these paths regularly over the dark Winter months and lighting would be of great benefit particularly in terms of safety.  It is suggested that bollard path lights would be appropriate and 15 units would adequately light the area described.

Consideration requires to be given to the state of the Boating Pond and its immediate environs.  The pond is used extensively by the Model Boating Club and creates great interest with Local and Tourist alike.  Unfortunately the quality and flow of the water and the recurring problem of algae detracts from the amenity of the area and requires to be addressed.  In consultation with the Model Boating Club it is suggested that the pond be drained, cleaned and chemically treated, a thick polythene or similar membrane laid over the bottom of the pond and weighed down with a hardcore dressing.  In addition to the above the water flow from the Mill Lade requires to be improved and regular cleaning out of the lade would be of immense benefit.  Of course all measures would require to have the sanction of SEPA and other statutory bodies.
