Renewal of Woodlands

A survey of the extensive tree belt bounding the West bank of the river valley has indicated that consideration needs to be given to the long term replacement of the trees.

The woodlands, planted by the Ulbster Estate, are located on the steep slope running from the high level Railway ground down to the riverbank and covers an area of approximately 2½ hectares.  It is estimated that the woodlands are in excess of a hundred years old and virtually all the trees have reached maturity.  The variety of tree types is mixed with a dominance of sycamore with ash, rowan, birch and aspen also represented.

It is proposed that steps should be put in hand to ensure that the magnificence of the Woodlands be preserved for future generations and it is suggested that a long term continuing underplanting programme be initiated probably over a ten year or longer period.

A general clean up of the Woodlands slope is also deemed necessary to complement the underplanting programme of works.  A proposal of this magnitude requires expert guidance and approaches to the Forestry Commission and other relevant bodies are in hand to ensure the best use of funding and voluntary effort is achieved.
