Wheelchair access/Cemetery bridge

This work section addresses one of the objects of the Study relating to the accessibility of wheelchair users to all the Mall/Riverside Walks and outlines proposals for access to the upstream footbridge known as the Cemetery Bridge.

It is proposed that ramps be constructed on the line of the existing paths at both banks of the river to allow access to the bridge.  The main deck of the bridge is some 1.5 metres above the path level either side of the bridge and to achieve the required gradient of 1 to 20 ramps with a total length of 30 metres either side will be required (see sketch layout drawing 03).

Low level paths either side of the ramp structures will be provided to allow access to the riverbanks and other path systems and the existing bridge concrete steps will be relocated to permit stair access to the bridge.  The ramps will be a minimum of 1.5 metres wide with a level rest area at the halfway point.  The rest areas will be designed in a way to create a feature and seating area and will relieve the severity of the sloping walling.

The construction will closely follow the ramp construction proposed for work Section 1 and consists of a mixture of stone walling with flagstone copings and concrete slab ramps.
