Fellowship Exchange
Members of the New Zealand Fellowship Exchange Group attended the Thursday meeting of the Thurso Club and are shown here with their host Rotarians. The group are visiting sites of interest in Caithness and North Sutherland and on Friday evening will attend a BBQ at Harpsdale arranged by Rotarian Bill Watson and his wife Elaine. On Saturday they set off south on their travels around District 1010.
Presidential Changeover 2007
At the Thurso Rotary Club Assembly and final meeting of the 2006 -2007 rotary year at the end of June plans were outlined for the for the new session of the club, which began on July 1st. The Club Service, Community Service and Vocational and International Committee Chairmen outlined their programme of events and incoming Club President John Hook gave his vision of the Club's role in the coming year to members. Also at the meeting three veteran Rotarians, Crear Shearer, James Campbell and Peter Murchison, received souvenir gold seating discs from outgoing President Murray Campbell in recognition of their regular attendance and fellowship at Table D, the 'senior members dinner table' at club meetings. Assistant District Governor Jim Young, a member of Elgin Rotary Club, was on hand to see how the Thurso Club conducts its business and to enjoy a meal with thirty Thurso area Rotarians. Rotary Open Golf Tournament 2007
After a postponement due to bad weather the Rotary Open finally got underway at Reay Golf Club in what was still less than ideal conditions. The winner for the second time, having held the trophy in 2004, was Reay Golf Club Champion, Gavin Sutherland. The Ladies section was won by Thurso's Rebecca Meiklejohn. Rotary Club of Thurso and Miller Academy Shelterbox Appeal Rotary Clubs across Britain and Ireland have been encouraging primary schools to raise money to support one of their projects – Shelterbox. A Shelterbox provides a tent, sleeping bags and other basic survival equipment for a family of 10 people and are despatched to disaster hit areas following earthquakes, floods, etc. Each Shelterbox costs £490. Miller Academy pupils have taken part in this scheme and have raised £390, mainly by charging £1 for tasks they did at home. This money will go to the Shelterbox fund project to buy the necessary equipment and specifically to assist with the 'A Million in Africa ' project to accommodate a million people in Africa hit by the many disasters troubling that continent. Pictured with Miller Academy pupils representing each of the school's classes and Depute Head Teacher, Edith Mitchell, are members of Thurso Rotary Club who, as a club, have previously sponsored six Shelterboxes two of which found their way to aid the Pakistan earthquake.
Thurso Round Table Fayre
Thurso Rotary took their usual stall at Thurso Round Table Fayre 2006 and though short of helpers they had a very productive afternoon. The three Rotarians in the picture (Allan Lannon, Simon Middlemas and Gordon MacLachlan) plus Rotarian Bob Earnshaw (taking the pic) are seen at their fundraising stall. On the second left can be seen Rotarian Graeme Dunnett who was in attendance to help Round Table in his final year with that club before they put him out to grass.
University of the Philippines Concert Chorus Once again Thurso audiences were enthralled by two concerts featuring the World renowned UP Concert Chorus. Their marvelous music and dance routines never cease to amaze with their fourth visit to the town being every bit as successful as earlier tours.
Happy Birthday President Murray Campbell A rendition of Happy Birthday was given for Club President Murray Campbell. More accustomed to being surrounded by objecting footballers in his role as a referee Murray far preferred the attentions of a bevy of beautiful Philippinos.

Ladies' Night 2006
Ladies' Night speaker Bunty Gunn takes the applause of Thurso Rotary Club members and guests in the Pentland Hotel, Thurso. The former Radio and TV presenter showed her media skills in an excellent and often humorous presentation on the topic of Communication.
Chest, Heart and Stroke Day The Club checked the blood pressure of over 50 individuals as part of their Heart, Chest and Stroke Day. Some checked were very pleased they had taken up the offer!
Rotary Primary School Quiz In a an evening of relaxed fun and entertainment in the Mont Pleasant School Hall Miller Academy Primary School narrowly won the Thurso Rotary Club Quiz Cup for 2006. There was a close fought competition between Miller Academy and four other schools - Pennyland, Castletown, Halkirk and Mount Pleasant. The winners were in doubt until the final round and all five teams were separated by just a few points. After the Quiz the large and appreciative audience and the competing schools indicated their pleasure at such an enjoyable evening and their hope that the event will be repeated in 2007. Thurso High School Mini-bus Fund
Andy Ford, Thurso High School PTA Chairman, and a group of pupils show President Bob Earnshaw and Community Committee Chairman Mike Potts around the new High School Mini-bus in acknowledgement of Thurso Rotary Club's donation to the Mini-bus fundraising effort.
Dunbar Day Gifts Representatives of Thurso Rotary Club and Thurso Inner Wheel have presented cheques to the Dunbar Hospital, Thurso to assist in the development of the Day Care Centre at the hospital. The total monies raised at a bag packing day in Somerfield's store, Thurso came to a magnificent total of £1165 with £665 being the Rotary contribution and £500 the donation from Thurso Inner Wheel.

THE GAVEL COMPETITION Thurso Rotary are flying in the Gavel Competion having to date beaten Wick and Stornoway in a triangular tournament held in Ullapool and more recently having defeated Dingwall in Thurso by the score of 33 -23. The games played were Dominoes, Draughts, Connect4, Jenga, Pool, Table Tennis and Indoor Curling. Team members: A.Sparling, J.Owen, B.Watson, L. Crawford, J.Simpson, S. Middlemas, F.Bremner, R. Gunn. The Club now await the draw for the next round which is due to take place early February.
ROTARY BURNS SUPPER
The Rotary Club of Thurso Burns Supper is
one of the premier events on the west side of the county. It is
always a sell out with over 100 attending this year in the Pentland
Hotel. The speakers, and indeed the whole event, was up to usual
high standard with some performance that can only be described as
superb. Ken Murphy gave an enthralling note free immortal memory,
one of the best ever heard by regular supper goers. Rotarian James
Campbell toasted the lassies with his customary humour and Celia
McDougall replied in similar fashion. The address to the haggis
was performed with gusto and superb delivery by Alan Sparling. The
singing of Mod Gold medalist Raymond Bremner was outstanding as was a
contribution from Celia McDougall. Alan Plowman was piper for the
evening and there cannot be many as skillful in the county. The
Rotary Club always have Thurso Round Table members as their guests at
this function and their Chairman has the duty of getting the evening off
to a good start with the Selkirk Grace and Michael Dunnett certainly
performed his task with confidence. The evening was rounded off
with community singing and a fine vote of thanks by Rotarian John Hook.
Finally a report would not be complete without mention of the
significant contribution made to the evening by Rotary Vice-President
Murray Campbell who chaired the supper. His chairmanship was
excellent and humorous and interspersed with authoritive
interjections, in keeping with his position as an top grade football
referee, when the audience became more than enthusiastic as the
evening wore on.
Charity Concert Thurso Rotary Club's All-Stars Charity concert was once again a roaring success with great music, a participative audience and over £1800 raised on the night for 'Sight Savers'. Below is a picture of one of the attractions, the Melvich Gaelic Choir.
Beach Cleans The last of the Thurso Beach cleans takes place on 18th October. Rotarians have cleaned litter from Thurso beach throughout Spring, Summer and Autumn in 2005 so helping to make the local environment a safer and more pleasant place.

Mission Fayre, Scrabster The Thurso Rotary Club gave their customary assistance to the RNMDSF Thurso and 'Mission Mannie', Murray Campbell at the annual Mission Fayre held at Scrabster.
As well as providing Fun Fundraising Stalls a club 'punishment stocks' was organised by former Vulcan Commander, Rotarian Simon Middlemas. Simon above was first for punishment but was closely followed by a worthy crew including Rotarians Ronnie Johnstone, Roger Saxon and David Grundy.
Ladies' Night 2005
At a very relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable Ladies' Night Mrs Heather McLean, a senior staff member from Thurso High School, recounted amusing events from her 35 years in teaching. The smaller than usual group of Rotarians and partners were enthralled by her stories and relaxed presentation. Club President, Iain Thomson, looks on admiringly as Heather tells yet another of her tales.
Inner Wheel Car Treasure Hunt
Rotarians joined Inner Wheel Ladies and friends for a fun Treasure Hunt around Caithness finishing at Waterlines, Lybster. Charitable Donations - 5th May 2005
Local Charitable Groups
receiving donations from Rotary Club of Thurso’s Charity fund in the first three
months of 2005 were invited to join club members for dinner in the Pentland
Hotel at last Thursday’s regular meeting of the Club. Charity representatives
present and receiving £1000 between them were Dunnet Beach Improvements Group,
Thurso Arthritis, Caithness Diabetics Equipment Group, Dunnet Playpark,
Caithness and Sutherland Women’s Aid, Tongue and Farr Sports Association and
Deaf Care Caithness.
This final dispersal of
funds for the 2004 -2005 Rotary year brought the Thurso Rotary Club charitable
assistance to worthy causes locally, nationally and internationally to almost
£15,000, a record total of assistance from the club in a single Rotary year.
While many worthy emergency causes in the third world were supported the Club
was still able to ensure that half the total went to the benefit of local
charities.
In addition to the
charitable causes supported Thurso Rotary has also financially backed a number
of other local initiatives including the Thurso High School Speechmaking
Competition, Mock Interviews for youngsters, the annual sponsored lecture and
the Rotary Youth Leadership Award Scheme.

Thurso Beach Clean The second Beach Clean of the 2005 season takes place on Tuesday 26th April at 6pm. Community groups able to assist Rotary are invited to attend. It is hoped to remove unsightly rubbish not just from the main Thurso beach area but also form the Thurso East bank to the castle side of the river.
Rotary Sponsored Speech Making Seven pupils from the 3rd and 4th years of Thurso High School competed in this years Rotary Sponsored Speech Making event held at Thurso Colleges Flagstones restaurant. This popular community occasion which has been run by Thurso Rotary Club since 1977, gives youngsters the opportunity to further develop their social and communication skills. An attentive audience heard excellent presentations on an extremely diverse range of topics covering Gaelic heritage, domestic abuse, bee keeping, making money, anti social behaviour and being a goal keeper. All the speeches were of an extremely high standard with the judging panel led by Rev Johnson eventually declaring Philip Todd the overall winner with a thought provoking talk on `Life without TV’. Philip was presented with the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, the RYLA Shield, by Rev Johnson and the evening was rounded off with a fine buffet provided by members of the Rotary Club.
APRIL FOOLS QUIZ NIGHT IN SKINANDIS ON 1st APRIL 2005 A great night was had by all!! 29 teams of four competed for the first prize of £100 which was one by 'The Greens' a team from Caithness Rugby Club. Around £500 was raised for local charities. Beach Cleans The first on this season's beach cleans was held in the last week of March. A large turnout of Rotarians and volunteers ensured the a substantial debris deposited by winetr storms was cleared from the foeshore. BURNS SUPPER 2005 Once again the Thurso Rotary Burns supper was one of the highlights of the year for the club and one of the premier suppers in Caithness. A superb group of speakers, ably introduced by President Iain Thomson, entertained a company of over 90 in the Pentland Hotel, Thurso. President Iain Thomson introduced the principal speakers Donald Omand, Michael Barry and Lesley Crawford after an energetic rendering of 'To a Haggis' by Alan Sparling. Grace before the meal was said by Andy Sutherland the Chairman of Thurso Round Table, the Haggis was piped in by Alan Plowman, Jock Campbell entertained the company with his accordion playing and Peter Murchison sang his usual selection of Burns songs.
TSUNAMI APPEAL Thurso Rotary Club members, assisted by Inner Wheel Ladies, carried out their annual New Year bag packing in the Somerfield store, Thurso and raised £1500 for the Tsunami disaster fund.
MOCK INTERVIEWS Once again the Thurso Club assisted Thurso High School pupils by providing practice interviews for candidates hoping to go onto further education. Members of the club, assisted by representatives of business and commerce, put candidates through their paces and then advised on how they might improve their interview technique.
AUCTION IN AID OF ROTARY HOPE CHARITY ROTARY HOT NEWS At an ambitious Rotary Sponsored Lecture aimed at presenting a high calibre speaker the club welcomed Everest climber Ian Woodall. He gave an informative and dramatic talk on his exploits on Mount Everest and his conquering of the North and South faces of the mountain. The audience of over 60 people left pleased with the evenings entertainment which included a wine and cheese starter to the event. Bonfire Night Once again Thurso Rotary Club supported Round Table in building the Thurso Bonfire and 'manning' the gates. On a damp night a large turnout enjoyed a spectacular display of fireworks. To add to the occasion various refreshments were on sale and children, and even some adults, purchased a variety of glowing lamps, torches and fluorescent head decorations. Monies collected this year will help to fund next year's event. ROTARY CLUB OF THURSO MEMBERSHIP AWARD The Club have been awarded the District 1010 award for the most successful membership drive in their Rotary District - well done Thurso.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD Again in 2004 Rotary Club of Thurso sponsored two teenagers to participate in the RYLA scheme. The chosen youngsters had a memorable time and reported on their experiences to the Thurso Club at the regular meeting on 21st October. Rotary Charity Auction Plans are well in hand for Thurso Rotary Club's Charity Auction in Skinandis Night Club on Friday 12th November at 7pm. The International and Vocational Committee are planning for an interesting evening of fund-raising and socialising with refreshments and entertainment to precede the auction.
The Club concert in aid of the Red Cross Sudan appeal was successful beyond expectation - ROTARY CLUB OF THURSO CAITHNESS ALL-STAR CONCERT £2500 was raised for the Red Cross Sudan Appeal at this very successful event. A varied and talented programme of artists entertained a packed house in Thurso High School on 10th September. Thanks to everyone, including the audience, involved in this magnificent effort.
Gordon Noble After many years of good and loyal service Past President Gordon Noble has resigned from the Club. He leaves with the good wishes of members and the thanks of all for his hard work over the years. Gordon has other interests to pursue and despite efforts to hold him within the club he felt he must devote more of his time to those developing interests.
New President At the start of the new Rotary year Thurso Rotary Club Past President, Paul Hagan, welcomed incoming President Iain Thomson who in turn congratulated new Vice-President Bob Earnshaw on his appointment.
Achvarasdal Outings Rotary Club of Thurso's first outing of 2004 for residents of Archvarasdal Eventide Home took place on 29th May. Residents and staff members enjoyed a light afternoon meal of homemade mushroom soup, sandwiches, tea or coffee and biscuits at the Bettyhill Hotel. They were transported there in a specially equipped bus by President Paul Hagan and Past President Allan Lannon.
RIBI ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD At the regular Rotary meeting last Thursday 20th May, the Thurso Club celebrated its success in gaining the RIBI Environmental award for the work carried out on the Mall Walk. Before a large turnout of Members, Highland Councillors from the Thurso area, representatives of Thurso in Bloom, local Council Officials and the local Press, Rotarian James Campbell outline the environmental work carried out over the years and particularly the ambitious Mall Project. James also described future plans for the play area adjacent to the Mall and for the equally ambitious developments planned for the Victoria Walk, Thurso. Even those involved in the planning and work associated with Mall Project could not fail to be impressed by the scale of the undertaking and the complexities of the project. It is little wonder that this project gained the Environmnetal award for the whole of Great Britain and Ireland. Watch this space for even more developments lead by Rotary Club of Thurso over the coming years!!

Club member James Campbell became the second Thurso Rotarian to be honoured with the Paul Harris Award. The presentation took place in the Pentland Hotel, Thurso on Saturday 15th May and was performed by President Paul Hagan ably supported by speeches from Hamish Holmes and Peter Murchison. BEACH CLEAN
Thurso Rotary Club's first Beach clean of the season took place on Tuesday 30th March. A massive accumulation of debris was removed from the beach and deposited in a Esplanade side skip. Regular beach cleans will take place over the summer co-ordinated by the Club and it is hoped that other organisations will come forward to lighten the load for Rotarians in this very worthwhile venture.
The Club followed this with a further Beach Clean in April.
MALL 2004
After the successes of the past 3 years the Mall development continues in 2004 with the replanting of the Mall rose beds, the provision of litter bins, a litter pick to get the Spring and Summer project of to a good start and the early stages of a project to improve the children's play area adjacent to Mill Road. As the project develops information and pictures will appear in the Mall Section of the website.
Rotary Speechmaking As ever the Rotary Speechmaking held in North Highland College was a great success. Seven pupils from third and fourth years of Thurso High School provided excellent entertainment. Their understanding of their chosen topics was impressive and their courage in front of a large audience equally noteworthy. The winner was Michael Barry talking about 'Identity'. New Member Lesley Crawford is the latest new member to join the club having been introduced by Brian Leonard and inducted by President Paul Hagan on Thursday 4th March. Lesley is the second lady member to join the Thurso Rotary Club. Rotary Burns Supper The Rotary Club of Thurso Burns Supper, always acknowledged to be one of the best and of the highest quality, took place in the Pentland Hotel recently. Top quality speakers entertained an audience of Rotarians, their guests and members of Thurso Round Table. The programme included Angus Mackay (Immortal memory), James Simpson (Toast to the Lassies), Carroll Buxton (Reply), Tam o’ Shanter by Peter Kelly and Fiddle Music by Roy Watson. This event had added significance in the Rotary Calendar and the History of Thurso Rotary Club being the first Thurso Rotary Club Burns Supper with ladies present and with the club's first lady Rotarian a speaker. New Member At a club meeting attend by a very large turnout of club members on 20th November David Grundy was inducted into the Club by President Paul Hagan.John Mowat 'Faroes' Lecture The lecture by John Mowat and sponsored by Thurso Rotary Club drew a large crowd at North Highland College. So many attended that extra seats had to be taken into the packed hall. The illustrated talk was enjoyed and well appreciated by the large audience. Fireworks Display and Bonfire Each year Rotary Club of Thurso assists Thurso Round Table with their impressive fireworks display at Thurso Harbour and Beach. This year the event takes place on Saturday 1st November at 7pm. Rotary Club will help man entrances to the esplanade and hope to organise a bonfire to run alongside the display of fireworks. This is an event not to be missed.Should bad weather cause cancellation of the event the fireworks display will take place on Saturday 8th but it will not be possible to have the bonfire that evening due to the time of the tides.Advance Warning! The Club's Family Night for members is to be held in the the Pentland Hotel on Thursday 18th December at 7.30pm.The Burns Supper, one of the foremost in the Burns celebrations calendar, is to take place on Thursday 15th January 2004 in the Pentland Hotel.Sponsored Lecture The Rotary Club of Thurso sponsored lecture due to take place at North Highland College on Tuesday 7th October had to be cancelled. The lecture called 'The Faroes' was to be presented by John Mowat. Unfortunately, the recent stormy weather, including gales, has disrupted the sailings from Orkney preventing the speaker from coming to speak in Thurso. The club prides itself on the support it gives to a wide range of community activities and good causes and this would have been just one such event. Maybe the lecture can take place later in the year.BUT the good news is the lecture has been rescheduled for Tuesday 28th October at 7.30pm in the same venue.New Member Rotary Club of Thurso's first lady member, Carroll Buxton, joined the club at the regular Thursday meeting on 18th September 2003.Beach Clean Thurso Rotary Club members were back on Thurso Beach on the evening of 29th September giving the beach a 'make-over' before the winter tides arrive. Volunteer helpers from the public are always welcome on those occasions and the club hopes some will join us next year and help to keep the beach clean for locals and tourists.The Mall Project The refurbishment of the Mall walk has now reached the stage where the path around the River Thurso is much improved and accessible to wheelchairs and prams. John Thurso MP will formally opened the new developments at a ceremony at the Camfield side of Mount Vernon Bridge at 2.30pm on Saturday 4th October. |
