THE RED CROSS SUDAN APPEAL CAITHNESS ALL-STAR CONCERT Clapshot, formed three years ago and playing a mix of Irish, Cape Breton and Scottish music, opened and closed the concert
Della Hickey, Strings Tutor for Caithness Schools, performed a transcription from a Bach cello suite. Della was followed Stuart Whitely on trumpet and Peter Dyson on Piano. They were joined by local musician Iain Sinclair. Sally Edwards and Donald McNeill gave the audience a mix of folk songs and contemporary pieces. On stage after them came the Pentland Brass Band, a group drawn from Caithness and Sutherland, under leader Ronnie McKain. Every event needs its backroom boys (and girls) and the raffle and refreshments proved popular at the interval. Interval entertainment was provided by Bruce and Katrina Gordon. And surely our MC looks as if he has won a raffle prize! A sketch by members of Thurso players added some 'spice' to the evening. Alex Rankine, Susan Mackrell and 'baby' gave an entertaining performance of the black comedy, 'Black and Silver'. Robert Field's piano playing enthralled the audience as did the Caithness Handbell Ringers. This latter group have now been ringing for five years. Their ringing at the concert was from Sir Arthur Sullivan's music. Oh dear! what is wrong with President Iain and is Rotarian Ronnie putting it right or make matters worse? All seems well and Rotary President Iain Thomson give a comprehensive vote of thanks. And another group of 'backroom boys' known from now as 'The Good, The Bad and the Ugly'. Take your choice as to which end you want to read from! Thanks to all who helped to raise in excess of £2300
